Migraine Symptoms
Those who are not regularly plagued by migraines might think they are just bad headaches, but there is often more to it than that. Common symptoms accompanying migraines include:
- Radiating, throbbing headache
- Nausea and/or vomiting
- Aura (blind spot, flickering vision)
- Aversion to light, sound, and movement
Types of Migraines
Not only is a migraine more than just a headache, it can also come in different types, such as:
Ocular Migraines
Ocular migraines (sometimes called retinal migraines, ophthalmic migraines, monocular migraines, optical migraine, or eye migraines) are visual disturbances in one or both eyes. They are generally painless, harmless, and temporary, going away on their one within about half an hour. However, it is a good idea to talk to your doctor to make sure it is not the result of a more serious problem.
Symptoms of ocular migraines could include a blind spot, flickering lights, or temporary blindness. When followed by a throbbing headache, the visual disturbance is known as an aura.
Generally, loss of vision in only one eye is a sign of a condition other than a migraine. See an eye specialist to find out for sure and get treatment if necessary.
Abdominal Migraines
What is an abdominal migraine? It sounds made up. But it is a sharp pain in the belly usually following a migraine trigger. Symptoms include pain, nausea, vomiting, pale appearance, and inability to eat.
Abdominal migraines occur in 2% of all children, generally among those with a family history of migraines. The condition is rare in adults and affects females more than males. Children with abdominal migraines tend to get migraine headaches as adults.
Hemiplegic Migraines
Those suffering from hemiplegic migraines have pronounced muscle weakness and even paralysis on one side of the body along with their migraine headaches. In extreme cases, some people develop long-term mobility and coordination problems.
Vestibular Migraines
A vestibular migraine (or a migraine with vertigo, migraine associated vertigo, or MAV) causes dizziness or imbalance before, during, after, or independently from a migraine headache. Again, vestibular migraines can have the same types of triggers as migraine headaches.
Migraine Causes and Triggers
The causes of migraines are not entirely understood, but they are related to the expansion of blood vessels in the brain. Individuals may have specific triggers that bring on migraines, including:
- Dehydration
- Certain foods
- Skipping meals
- Stress and tension
- Birth control pills
- Alcohol
- Smoking
- Physical or emotional stress
- Irregular sleep
- Sinus problems
If you can pinpoint your trigger and avoid it, you may be able to reduce the frequency or intensity of your migraines. For headaches triggered by stress or lack of sleep, treat the underlying problem with our stress relief IV therapy or sleep aid hydration treatment. Along with treating your migraines themselves, treating your trigger can also help reduce the frequency of your painful headache
How to Get Rid of a Migraine Fast
Many people who suffer from mild or moderate migraines can manage them without medication using a variety of self-care techniques. Try these foods and other home remedies to figure out what works for you.
- Water
Of course, hydration throughout the day can help prevent or minimize migraines. Drinking water or sports drinks with electrolytes when you first notice signs of a migraine can make all the difference for some people.
- Grape Juice
Grape juice or grapes blended and mixed with water offer effective, natural pain relief.
- Nuts
Nuts contain salicin, a pain-blocking agent used in many medications. Try nuts to relieve and prevent migraine headaches.
- Ginger root
Ginger root and ginger tea make your cells produce lipids, which soothe the nerves responding to pain and alleviate nausea.
- Turkey
The amino acid tryptophan found in turkey stimulates the brain to produce dopamine, which helps your body release serotonin. Serotonin helps your body relax, including the muscles surrounding your brain.
- Pressure and Massage
It may feel like more pressure is the last thing you need but stretching and massaging your neck and scalps stimulates blood flow and reduces pressure.
- Heat or Cold
Try a heat pack or cold pack to see which works better for you. Heat helps the muscles in your head relax to reduce the pain, while cold numbs the area.
- Herbs
Herbal tea made with ginger, cayenne pepper, peppermint, and/or feverfew is a natural pain relief option. If tea is not your thing, try lemonade with lavender.
- Darkness
Shut off the lights, close the curtains, and wear sunglasses if you must—bright light can cause or worsen a migraine, so darkness can make a big difference in your pain.
- Caffeine
For some people, caffeine is a trigger for migraines. For others, it provides relief. Try a small amount of caffeine (one cup of coffee or one caffeinated soda).
These home remedies take time to work and may provide only partial relief. Our migraine relief IV therapy is a better alternative to unreliable home remedies. No more retreating into a dark room by yourself to wait it out. An IV fluid hydration treatment provides fast acting relief while allowing you to relax in our spa setting.
Accepted Payments for IV Therapy
We accept cash and most credit cards, including VISA, MasterCard, American Express and Discover. Our services are HSA (Health Savings Account) approved, so you can also pay that way. We do not accept insurance, but our costs are typically less than what you can expect to pay for an ER copay, without having to sit in a waiting room.
